Soaring instrumental rock of many flavors

"Colster is a new project from Cuneo, Italy, the collaboration of multi-instrumentalist Livio Cravero and percussionist/drummer Francesco Previotto. Their impressive debut album has been released on Ma.Ra.Cash Records and features compositions the duo wrote over the past two years. During this time they were traveling in Europe, America, and Asia, engaging another interest in photography that they have integrated into the Colster project. They sought to create instrumental music which would express their life experiences while at the same time be accessible and conducive to mental imagery for the listener. While I have read some reviews which mentioned Pink Floyd and King Crimson in their discussion, in my opinion this is music which sails closer to modern psych/space-tinged jamming with Djam Karet and Ozric Tentacles flavorings. I would say Colster is a bit more accessible than those bands even, creating an almost instantly appreciated rock jam with psychedelic influences but far from anything seriously weird or dissonant. This is a classy and interesting new act that will make some waves, and a second album is already planned.

The most overt Crimson sounds I heard were on the opening track "Searching Absolution pt 1" which reminded me of the 80s project "I Advanced Masked" that Fripp did with Andy Summers of The Police. I have no idea how long Livio and Francesco have been friends or how long they've been jamming together but they have a good interplay, and are musically supportive of each other. While not overly flasher exhibitionists they possess a certain confident swagger in their active playing styles. Cravero is a tight guitarist with a graceful, fluid lead style, able to pick off notes that seem to fill those emotional holes in the listener. Previotto is a similarly adept drummer, adventurous and yet solid, willing to try some fills and rhythms which are not always expected. Their interplay is spirited, warm, and most importantly, filled with color.

The mood of the music for me was especially effective as a driving soundtrack in the dark of night. I was driving home late last Friday night from someone's house. It was warm and humid outside and the thick air was creating a slight halo effect around the bright lights of oncoming cars on the freeway. The track "Meloncholy" came up next and the lovely introspective music created a very effective moment: the bright guitar mixing with the headlights cutting through the night, the movement of the cars around me, and the warm breeze coming through the window made for magical listening. "The First Wail" was the first Colster composition and it breathes moodiness with gorgeous, spacious chords and leads. Cool, rolling drumming segments and generous fills in the latter half of "Everyday Life." The latter moments remind me a bit of Porcupine Tree here and there, nice spaciness and good interplay. "Island Asylum" sounds like some mellotron behind strange environmental sound, soaring guitars, crisp drums, in a track focusing on the pleasure of the refuge. Where one goes to "lick his wounds" and find some peace from distraction and stress, according to the band liner notes. The second part of the three part "Searching Absolution" begins with an energetic drum solo leading into murky sounds reminiscent for me of Djam Karet explorations. Amazing "lead" drumming on this track as Previotto explodes with bombast-great! "See through the Tears" brings the album to a close through the "tears of the world" and more introspective moods, with a somewhat melancholic melody and a very independent bass line bubbling below the song's surface.

Colster succeeds at what I believe are one of their intentions, creating a sort of soundtrack for the thoughts and images of the listener, music that moves with you as you live. And yet it is important to reiterate that their succinct style is a strength. They improvise and dream musically of course, they take you places, but they keep the pieces reasonably brief and well paced, stretching the length out only as necessary. There is no overindulgence here where you are tortured by 16 minutes of feedback over breaking glass and barking dogs. Colster brings a lighter edge to psych/space and are capable of crossover should they choose to go there. At times there are even hints of fusion that creep in reminding me of the superb AIIR jam band. My only real criticism is the same one I often have about bands which are one or two man projects. No matter how capable the musician or musicians, I can always detect that I am not listening to a full band. I believe having 3 or 4 distinct personalities in a project comes through in the sound, and that the added ideas and contributions can prevent an album's worth of music from sounding too similar. But while I would suggest Colster collaborate with others on at least some tracks on future albums, I can also say that my enjoyment was not truly hindered in this case---this is a fine album which I very much enjoyed. The digi-pak comes with a booklet of lovely artwork and song inspiration notes about various tracks, a nice and intimate touch to include."

(1)"When, where and by whom was your band born ? Did any of you, past and present members, play in any other bands before joining up in your band ? Why did you choose that name ?"

We have being playing from 11 years ago and growing up together musically, after playing in various bands mainly from blues-rock sound, we have developed over time a strong interest in musical experimentation, and therefore born in 2007 Colster project as a duo. The idea was to create new compositions giving free rein to our creativity without limits. The choice to named the band Colster, word invented by us, is an expression of our approach to music without limitations, which gives more importance to creativity and sound. In fact, we preferred to choose a name not from the precise and definite meaning, but a word that sounds good to our ears.

(2)"For those of us unknown with your music; how would you describe you music and which bands would you compare yourself with ?"

In our first album we tried to create an ideal background for listener's thoughts to experience different emotions, and at the same time, be fully involved in our music with complete freedom of interpretation, trying to give much importance to instrumental music characterized by frequent scene changes and intensity, just as happens in classical music. Our inspiration comes mainly from the progressive rock bands and psychedelia of the seventies, which had been the first to follow this approach with experimental music, and that unfortunately is no longer in vogue. In addition, we have always been very influenced by the blues. Do not feel to list the bands that influenced us in what we do, because they are many and there is the risk to forget someone important.

(3)"Your one and only album so far; Colster was released last year. Please tell us more about this album."

Our first album is the result of several musical ideas developed over the years, we had also been inspired by the trips we'd taken in Europe, Asia and the United States. During these trips we had collected many ideas and images that we then used for the cover of the album and the video trailer. We strongly believe in the approach we have sound-image and personally supervised every aspect of our compositions sound-image. The album was self produced and recorded "in house" between 2008 and 2009 and was released in the spring of 2010 with the help of records Ma.ra.cash who believed in us, also thanks to them we had the opportunity to play that summer in important contexts such as the Gong Festival in Parma with famous progressive names like The Tangent, at the ExProg of Mogliano Veneto culminated with the participation of Marillion, and at the Alex prog festival closed by IQ.

(4)"You are currently working on a new album, I have been told. What can we expect from this album ?"

Yes, we are currently in the process of composition, and we have already provided many ideas, some of them recorded even before the completion of the first album. We definitely plan to introduce some changes in our compositions. For example, many of our ideas have ethnic influences, and try to increase the use of acoustic instruments. We also intend to let go more and more without being bound by any genre in particular. For our second album, the core composition will be composed of the two of us, but we do not exclude the collaboration of other musicians, particularly from our bassist and keyboardist who support us in live.

(5)"Besides of this album; what have you been up to since the release of your album and what is your latest update ? What is your plans for this year and beyond ?"

After the official presentation of the album to "IndependenteMente Musica" in Reggio Emilia, an event dedicated to independent music in which performed the Moongarden with whom we have had the pleasure to collaborate with Gong Festival in Parma and the Ex-prog festival, several reviews very encouraging have been published, especially yours (which we are very proud!), and we had proposals for live performances so we concentrate on the preparation for the live situation so we had to find musicians and perform some rearrangements of the songs with the goal of making live more interesting. The musicians that currently support us are also our dear friends, Andrea Burdese (keyboards) and Andrea Gorga (bass). We also created a video to be shown during our performances, that follows the style of the video trailer posted in our record. This year we plan to prepare our second album and hope to participate again in live events rewarding as those of last summer.

First of all we want to thank you for asking us to have this interview, and for publishing a review of our record so beautiful. We also want to thank all the people that somehow are interested in us. What can we say, a few time before, we used to link to your site often and dreamed of one day also be able to see ours, and now it has happened .. We are very pleased with this first year of Colster and we hope that this is only the first of a series of interesting albums and featuring by different personalities.

It seems that pure instrumental music is going through a revival, looking at the number of promos of this kind of music I've had to review the past few months. However, in the case of the Italian duo Colster, consisting of Livio Cravero on guitar, bass and synths and Francesco Previotto on drums and percussion, this is not a punishment. Their eponymous debut album contains nine enjoyable tracks which differ considerably in style. It's for instance very clear where Colster get their absolution in the track Searching Absolution: the nineties incarnation of Robert Fripp's King Crimson. The First Wail starts with a bit of fusion after which the song develops into a progressive piece. Everyday Life reminds me of The Mahavishnu Orchestra playing on a quiet Sunday afternoon, while Alan Holdsworth and the Jamband pay a visit. These guys are able to produce nice full and rounded sounds, which stays transparent all the while. Because of this, Colster is good for a pleasant hour of music, yielding one of the better instrumental releases of the past few months.

"Quando viaggi, esperienze, scoperte, sensazioni e ricordi diventano musica. E' quanto cercano di fare i Colster, nuovo duo piemontese composto dal chitarrista e tastierista Livio Cravero e dal batterista Francesco Previotto, prodotto dalla Maracash. Non è un caso che l'etichetta di Massimo Orlandini abbia qualche anno fa dato spazio ad una proposta simile, quella del duo Alphaterra: se però questi ultimi spaziavano in un'indistinta area fusion/new age, i Colster propongono un altro tipo di viaggio.

"Colster" è l'ideale colonna sonora di un "romanzo di formazione": tutto ciò che stimola l'immaginazione del duo diventa musica, supportato dalle immagini del libretto. La tavolozza sonora dei Colster è variabile e cangiante: se "Searching absolution" parte in quarta ricordando le spigolose e serrate esplorazioni dei King Crimson, "Island Asylum" recupera sapori genesisiani e svolta in rock blues; "Everyday life" è un art rock di marca floydiana dominato dal guitar-work di Cravero, "Melancholy" un buon compromesso tra psichedelia e rock maturo.

In generale la proposta strumentale del duo è abbastanza semplice, ma l'assenza di complessità non è sinonimo di banalità: l'esposizione di temi e riff è valida, così lo sviluppo con assoli mai troppo invadenti e un clima espressivo efficace. E' anche vero che una formula come questa ha bisogno di varianti continue e di trovate imprevedibili: è il caso di "The first wail", che abbina un'andatura profondamente floydiana ad atmosfere misteriose con sprazzi rock-jazz.

Un buon album d'esordio, convinto e convincente, per un progetto che ha davvero qualcosa da dire, pur meritando i dovuti ritocchi e perfezionamenti."

"Come è giusto che accada, le migliori sorprese arrivano sempre quando meno te l'aspetti! Questo piccolo cd dall'aspetto grafico così caratteristico ed esotico, frutto di una serie di esperienze di viaggio, dall'America all'estremo oriente, sembra maturato all'interno di una serie di profonde riflessioni sul mondo e sull'umanità... il tutto attraverso il filtro musicale di un rock progressivo che mantiene una sua ortodossia, derivata dal rispetto di determinati e noti stilemi musicali (King Crimson, Pink Floyd), ma che riesce comunque ad avere una sua particolare personalità. I Colster sono una coppia di ragazzi piemontesi, Livio Cravero e Francesco Previotto, giunti al loro esordio discografico con un disco autoprodotto che racchiude la voglia di esprimere in piena libertà la loro creatività di musicisti senza dover rendere conto di obblighi o scadenze... La scelta dei Colster è quella di esprimersi attraverso un linguaggio puramente strumentale, formato da continui chiaroscuri emozionali in cui prendono forma le sensazioni e le esperienze accumulate e provate durante tutti questi anni, positive e negative. Il linguaggio musicale è comunque piuttosto immediato e melodico, privo di velleità avanguardistiche od innovative: il suono compatto e sofisticato del disco si orienta verso un rock multiforme e piacevolmente psichedelico, che spazia nel giro di cinquanta minuti dalle torride e visionarie atmosfere blues-oriented, con qualche richiamo, probabilmente involontario, al David Torn più blueseggiante e roots, con agganci più espliciti a David Gilmour, Jeff Beck... e direi anche Steven Wilson, alle sincopate ed inquiete progressioni chitarristiche alla Robert Fripp e Trey Gunn, con un intelligente utilizzo dei synth a fare da contorno e sfondo, con tanto di mellotron ed organo (verosimilmente emulato) nei momenti più tipicamente seventies. Un umore malinconico e crepuscolare pervade l'intero disco, salvo nei momenti in cui si distingue nettamente un'intensa tensione spirituale ed una visionarietà che si esprime forse proprio nei brani più dilatati e riflessivi... in generale l'approccio dei Colster è alquanto posato e rilassato, a dispetto dei momenti più "frippiani", e nonostante questo sia un disco strumentale quasi del tutto incentrato sulla chitarra elettrica, Livio Cravero dosa i suoi assoli di chitarra con grande equilibrio e gusto, privilegiando l'atmosfera e l'emozione piuttosto che il gesto virtuosistico. I Colster hanno dunque realizzato un disco che brilla per intensità e forza espressiva, senza pretendere di essere più di quello che è, ovvero un buonissimo cd d'esordio per un gruppo che può avere davanti a sé un futuro promettente."

Review by "The Collapso"

"Uscito a fine dello scorso anno, recensito da Giovanni per Arlequins lo scorso dicembre, è un disco che mi sembra passato un po' inosservato nel forum.. Ho conosciuto i ragazzi venerdì al concerto dei Moongarden a Reggio, dove hanno appunto presentato ufficialmente il loro disco in vista della prima uscita live del 31 luglio al Gong Festival.

Sono due ragazzi 25enni che suonano assieme da dieci, uno suona la batteria e l'altro tutte le restanti parti strumentali. Nascono come distaccamento da un gruppetto blues rock della periferia cuneese, da che ho capito i due ragazzi avevano in mente un progetto che a quanto pare non interessava agli altri componenti del gruppo, per cui hanno deciso di mettersi in proprio. A partire dalla copertina si capisce la loro ispirazione, data dai loro trascorsi viaggi (ahimè, beati tempi dell'università) in oriente (Giappone), ma anche nel continente americano.

Un disco molto riflessivo, tutto strumentale, dove vengono illustrati momenti variopinti che rappresentano vari stati d'animo. Le influenze sono abbastanza chiare, ma non per questo si presenta come un lavoro poco originale, anzi. Sicura influenza dei King Crimson del doppio trio e post, mescolati a momenti ispirati ai Floyd più sognanti, ma anche con una buona dose di improvvisazione blues qua e là, il tutto condito da una moderata dose di cosmicità e lisergia.

A quanto dicono i Colster, l'ascolto ottimale del disco lo si deve accompagnare con la visione delle varie fotografie che hanno scattato durante i loro viaggi per il mondo (anche in italia), all'interno del CD si trova infatti una traccia bonus (che ancora devo guardare) con varie parti dell'album che fanno da colonna sonora alla presentazione fotografica.

C'è da credere che dal vivo presenteranno uno spettacolo audiovisivo davvero bello.

Posso dirvi una cosa e mi sbilancio: sicuramente uno dei dischi più interessanti dell'ultimo anno."

"L'album omonimo Colster è il prodotto musicale delle esperienze di vita e dei viaggi dei due componenti della band, il chitarrista (e bassista e tastierista) Livio Cravero e il batterista Francesco Previotto.

Interamente strumentale, l'opera prima del duo piemontese, supera l'esame a pieni voti. Non inventano nulla, ma quello che fanno è senza dubbio apprezzabile, a dimostrazione, se ce ne fosse bisogno, che il prog nostrano, tra graditi ritorni (Eris Pluvia), conferme (Maschera di cera, Areknames) e novità (Wishin'cap) sa ancora emozionare.

"Searching absolution", ma anche "Searching absolution pt. 2 e pt.3", si abbeverano alla fonte del Re Cremisi Fripp e ricordano (pur senza averne la potenza devastante) Larks' tongues in aspic: un brano "aperto", in continuo divenire, in cui la chitarra di Cravero dispensa ora "sciabolate" violente ora "toccate" di fioretto di classe assoluta ed anche la batteria di Previotto fa la sua bella figura.
"The first wall" segue andazzi floydiani soprattutto nel finale ed anche la piacevole "Everyday life" si può ricondurre a Gilmour e Co. o se preferite ai primi Porcupine Tree. Le screziature fusion di "Island asylum" sfociano nella claustrofobica (e troppo breve) "Mind Rejection", mentre con "Melancholy" i fumi psichedelici dei Floyd tornano a fare la loro comparsa.
Digressioni chitarristiche pacate e d'atmosfera intensa emergono nella conclusiva "See through the tears" che definisce un album davvero convincente ed un altro tassello musicale importante in quest'ultimo scorcio di 2010."

Blog ATHOS - Colster Interview

I Colster sono un gruppo piemontese proveniente da Bra in provincia di Cuneo. Il nucleo compositivo della band è formata da Livio Cravero (chitarra, basso, sintetizzatori) e Francesco Previotto (batteria e percussioni). Il progetto Colster nasce dalla necessità dei due componenti di dare libero sfogo alla propria creatività a 360 gradi, senza vincoli o inibizioni miscelando diversi generi musicali, esperienze di vita negative e positive e i viaggi intrapresi dal duo attraverso Europa, America e Asia. Questo primo Album omonimo, composto ed inciso tra il 2008 ed il 2009, è completamente strumentale, ed è il risultato delle influenze musicali legate al passato ma soprattutto alle nuove tendenze prog. Gli accostamenti più classici possono essere King Crimson, Anglagard e Porcupine Tree, prima maniera, miscelate con il romanticismo e la sinfonia del miglior Hackett. I Colster, inoltre, credono molto nell'accostamento musica-immagini, infatti ogni singola immagine legata alla realizzazione del disco è stata fotografata e rielaborata dai membri stessi del gruppo. Il cd esce in serie limitata in confezione extra lusso Digipack limited con la bonus Video track (Colster video trailer) composta da una sequenza di immagini scattate dai due componenti del gruppo e da un mix delle tracce dell'album. La band sarà in tour nell' estate dove si esibirà nelle maggiori città ed è prevista la loro partecipazione per il 31 Luglio 2010 al Gong Festival di Parma. (Camelot Club)

(1)"Quando mi viene proposto il nome di un gruppo/artista che non conosco, come nel caso di Colster, la prima azione che compio è quella di ricercare un brano e "vedere di che si tratta", è l'impatto risulta sempre determinante. Qual è il vostro giudizio sulle attuali tecnologie a disposizione? E' davvero tutto positivo? "

Noi siamo molto grati alla tecnologia, senza di essa non avremmo potuto realizzare un album in studio essendo solamente due musicisti e con un budget ristretto, grazie a un PC e a un software multi traccia invece è stato possibile. Poi La tecnologia da la possibilità ai musicisti di sperimentare nuove sonorità. D'altro canto però oggi è possibile scaricare tonnellate di musica da internet che viene ascoltata distrattamente rischiando di non darle il giusto valore , una volta per ascoltare musica bisognava comprare il vinile…. decisamente più affascinante e appagante!

(2)"Il Prog resta un prodotto di nicchia, nonostante certi successi di pubblico e vendite in Oriente e nel Nord Europa. C'è spazio per un ritorno agli antichi fasti, o l'easylistening resterà la necessità primaria della massa degli utenti musicali? "

Fino a quando i principali mezzi di comunicazione di massa si rifiuteranno di promulgare questo genere musicale sicuramente il Prog rimarrà di nicchia. I tempi radiofonici e televisivi sono troppo brevi per un genere articolato come il Prog, la maggior parte degli utenti musicali è abituata ad ascoltare brani poco articolati e di breve durata. Ma la speranza è l'ultima a morire!

(3)"Qual è stata, sino ad oggi, la colonna sonora della vostra vita? Quali gli artisti di riferimento?"

Elencare tutti gli artisti che ci hanno influenzato è per noi impossibile,sicuramente ne dimenticheremmo troppi e troppo importanti, possiamo indicare i generi: che spaziano dal blues al classic rock al jazz al progressive rock alla musica elettronica contemporanea al post rock e al rock psichedelico. Se dovessimo scegliere una colonna sonora della nostra vita sarebbe sicuramente un brano dei Pink Floyd.

(4)"Avete viaggiato molto. Qual è stato l'incontro o la situazione musicale più gratificante e quella più deludente?"

La più gratificante è stata assistere ad una funzione religiosa sull'isola di Miyashima in Giappone, i suoni dei loro strumenti musicali sono stati fonte di ispirazione per "Searching absolution Fase2". La meno appagante è successa in Italia: durante un nostro concerto con un trio blues, una ragazza sale sul palco e ci chiede:"potete suonare un pezzo di Tiziano Ferro?"

(5)"L'accostamento musica/immagine che proponente mi riporta alle vecchie copertine dei vinili, piccoli capolavori descrittivi, curati nei dettagli, e alla fine caratteristici di una band( Dean/Yes).Da dove arriva, nel vostro caso, la necessità di esprimersi parallelamente con suoni e "pictures"? "

Abbiamo sempre avuto la passione quasi maniacale per le copertine caratteristiche dei gruppi prog anni 60/70, inoltre ci tenevamo a raccogliere alcuni nostri scatti effettuati durante momenti importanti della nostra vita che di conseguenza hanno influenzato la nostra musica. Inoltre riteniamo che le nostre fotografie possano aiutare a comprendere meglio la musica dei Colster.

(6)"Cito sempre una frase del mio amico Fabrizio Poggi che afferma che durante i concerti non esiste differenza tra pubblico e artista, slavo la posizione, uno di fronte all'altro. Qual è il vostro rapporto con chi sta "in front of you", durante le vostre performance? "

Cerchiamo sempre di emozionarci suonando per poter a sua volta emozionare il pubblico attraverso la nostra musica.

(7)"Su "Rock Map", di Riccardo Storti, si accentua la differenzazione della proposta italiana passata, in funzione della regione di provenienza, una sorta di influenza indotta dalla cultura del luogo in cui si è vissuti. Quanto c'è in voi, musicalmente parlando, della provincia piemontese?"

Abitiamo immersi nelle Langhe e abbiamo lo studio in un piccolo paesino di costruzione Romana! Questo meraviglioso posto in cui si intrecciano storia e paesaggi collinari sicuramente è stato fonte di grande ispirazione. La nostra vena emozionale è tipicamente italiana ma musicalmente siamo più legati alla cultura anglosassone.

"Denne selvtitulerte skiva er totalt instrumental, og er tuftet på erfaringene disse to musikerne har av positiv og negativ art på sine reiser i Europa, Asia og Amerika. En annen viktig faktor er å la kreativiteten flomme så å si, og at enhver hindring og regel som er premissleverandør av forstyrrende negativ påvirkning skal bortfalle. Et annet mål er at musikken til Colster skal avleire store mulighet og sjanser for at lytterne til å danne seg sine egne fortolkninger og forestillinger. Et slags opplegg til at det musikalske åndsverket sørger for at lytteren bringes i en stemning hvor refleksjoner og den såkalte "individuelle filmskapelsesprosessen" slår ut i full blomst. Musikken på skiva er ikke pretensiøs på noen måte, og det er ikke avant garde elementer eller annet som muligens kan oppfattes som musikalsk "stasj". Fokus er på å formidle akkumulerte personlige og følelsesmessige erfaringer fra nevnte reiser gjennom et filter av rock, og hvorav blant annet Pink Floyd og King Crimson nok er de mest åpenbare musikalske inspirasjonskildene . Dette klarer duoen med en musikalsk utforming som er temmelig melodiøs og tilgjengelig. På knappe førti minutter presenteres vi her for rikholdige musikalske scenarioer i en rolig og behagelig setting, kanskje for behagelig vil noen si? Skiva har likevel mange fine psykedeliske øyeblikk, og noen umiskjennelige bluesvibber hører selv et utrent øre. Gitarene er ofte temmelig viktige i den settingen som skiva rader opp med en stemning som er dunkel og melankolsk. Synthene gjør også sitt til å understøtte og sementere nevnte gjennomgripende stemning, og samarbeider forbilledlig med gitarene. Den "mellotrongærne" får kaskader av liflige toner og også en viss bruk av orgel så vidt vi kan høre, og det er i så henseende en umiskjennelig 70 tallspreg over dette verket. Uansett så er elektrisk gitar det førende instrumentet, og gitasoloene utføres ganske så smakfullt av Livio Cravero. Han har den flotte evnen til å prioritere den subtile og stemningsfulle mer enn å vise seg i all sin eplekjekke virtuositet. Skiva bærer bud om et band som har mye bra på sin agenda, og musikken vokser ved gjentatte avspillinger. Musikken er uttrykksfull og rikholdig på små kreative og lekre detaljer, og er en skive med varme og sjarme som passer bra til mange anledninger hvor det å dypdykke i musikken er mulig."

"Livio Cravero (bass, guitar, synths) and Franscesco Previotto (drums, percussion) from Italy together form Colster and here with their self-titled album they make their debut album. Colster was created by the two band members as an outlet for their experiences in life, both the positive and negative sensations from their past lives, their musical influences, their experiences through travelling. This gave them the freedom of creativity to produce this instrumental release using whatever musical style, genre was needed. This includes progressive rock, psychedelic sounds, ambient atmospheres, mixing blues, rock Jazz, feelings and nature. All of the above are present in the music in one way or another. Mixing this just right leaves you listening to Colster. Although an instrumental from start to finish it's full of mood swings, catchy tunes, but then again lots of psychedelia as well.

In their press release Cravero and Previotto state that they try to create an atmosphere where the listener is free to form his own interpretation and imagination. My listening experience tells me listening to the album is like one long trip. No need for a drugs just listen in and let Cravero take you away with his creative guitar playing or even the synth sounds in the back. Whereas Previotto with his very subtle drumming and playing the percussion just adds the right backing to the various tracks. Looking at the single tracks each of them creates their own specific atmosphere and takes you as a listener to another place in the everyday life.

• Searching Absolution has a feel to it, as though it was one long, bad experience and you are trying to get to peace with yourself, or get absolution. Psychedelic sounds remind me of Hawkwind in the early 70's. A rough tune with heavy guitar, but also tranquil bits and pieces.
• On track 2 The First Wail, the listener is taken on a trip to the main character's lost love or lost emotions and where the wail is represented through a wailing guitar sounds and with organ forming the background.
• Everyday Life is very psychedelic, with mood swings all over the place, not to mention musical styles. We hear some jazzy bits, a little blues, prog rock, in fact everything comes along.
• Island Asylum is a track with very subtle guitar work and easy, almost tranquil synths, in the background. Do not misunderstand me, however, the track is not an easy listening piece of music, but sets a peaceful feeling where you can float off to the higher world.
• Next up is Mind Rejection which is an electronic piece in the vein of Ozric Tentacles, rather short just under 2:30, but with synths that really crawl into the mind.
• Following this are part 2 and 3 of Searching Absolution and I could not understand why they didn't join these two tracks into one as this would do the music a lot more justice.
• Melancholy is what the song title states - a melancholic piece of music, with guitar wailing sounds and lovely synthesizer play, all encased in an ambient like atmosphere.
• With See Through The Tears, the final chapter on the album, it all continues with ambient tunes leaving lots of room for interpretation by the listeners.

Cravero and Previotto, as Colster, have delivered a nice album that will most definitely appeal to people that like Dean Watson or John Petrucci, even Steve Vai and Joe Satriani - granted it is more psychedelic than those artists care to play, but it is very well done."
